At home

  • Close the windows, especially in bedrooms.
  • Run an air purifier with a HEPA filter in the room you use most, with its door closed.
  • Using aircon? Set it to recirculate, not fresh air.
  • Avoid incense, joss sticks, candles, smoking and heavy frying. They add to the PM2.5 indoors.
  • If someone at home is vulnerable, keep one room as a clean room with a purifier.

Going out

  • Sheltered isn't indoors. Void decks, covered walkways and open-air hawker centres have the same air as outside.
  • Check the 1-hr PM2.5 before exercising outdoors. It changes from hour to hour.
  • Outdoors for long? An N95 mask filters PM2.5; surgical masks don't. N95s aren't designed for young children.
  • Choose air-conditioned places for exercise and errands.

Signs to watch for

Throat or eye irritation from short exposure usually clears once you're out of the haze. Anyone feeling unwell should see a doctor, especially with breathlessness, chest tightness or wheezing. If you have asthma or a heart condition, keep your medication within reach.
